Do you ever wonder why you feel better when you listen to music? Do you wonder why when you roll the windows down and belt out the lyrics to your favorite song you feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off your shoulders? Well that's because music is powerful.
You probably have a playlist on your phone for when you want to listen to some oldies, some underground indie band you feel cool for knowing, or just one full of only one direction songs (if you don’t, what are you doing?). When we play these specific songs, they make us feel a certain way. This is because music has such a big impact on our mood. When we are stressed and pulling out our hair, music can help us relax. When we have just been dumped, music lets us cry our hearts out. This is because music allows us to be transferred into a new world, letting us escape reality for just a couple of minutes. Listening to a song allows you to escape into the melodies, move with the chorus, and flow with the verses. So next time you feel down in the dumps or overwhelmed, play your favorite song and tune out the world.
Something that has helped me survive high school was music. Whenever I had an essay or boring assignment due at midnight (don’t procrastinate kids) I would listen to music. Listening to my favorite songs helped me tune out all other distractions, it felt like I was in my own little bubble. Somehow, as I listened to the melodies I was able to focus on my much less glamorous reality: calculus. However, it isn’t just music that can help you focus. Whenever I’m painting or doing daily tasks, I like to listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Time for a shameless self promo! Our first ever podcast episode was released on the 15th! It’s called Artiscape, and I promise you it's more interesting than lets say, *shudder* physics.
So whether you’re listening to the piano keys of a ballad or strumming the strings to your own tune on your guitar, remember just how important music is and how powerful it can be.
