BIOGRAPHY
Nicola Barth (born 1966 in Mölln, Germany) is a contemporary artist whose work engages with themes such as transformation, temporality, and the in-between space of being and becoming. She lives and works near Frankfurt am Main.
After studying German literature, theatre, film and television studies, as well as psychology at Goethe University Frankfurt, writing was initially her chosen form of expression. Over time, however, she realized that words were not sufficient to grasp the inner, ongoing processes of transformation that occupy her. This insight led her to the visual arts, and particularly to non-representational painting.
Her visual vocabulary moves between fragment and flow. She explores questions of identity, perception, and metaphysical transition. In many of her works, she captures a temporally and spatially condensed moment within a larger process of transformation, rendering the ephemeral visible.
Her practice encompasses painting, drawing (especially with graphite and oil), sculpture, and digitally manipulated photography.
Nicola Barth has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows across Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, the USA, and the United Kingdom. In 2021, she participated in the London Art Biennale. In 2020, she received the Artfacts Performance Award for the dynamic development of her artist ranking. Most recently, her work has been shown at the CICA Museum in South Korea and at World Art Dubai.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic practice centers on transformation and the ephemeral nature of existence. I am drawn to the thresholds between time, space, and identity—those fragile, often overlooked moments where one state becomes another. These fluid transitions are at the heart of my abstract paintings and sculptures, where visible and invisible forces collide and intermingle.
Working intuitively, I begin with acrylic paint for its immediacy, layering it with oil to build depth and emotional resonance. This material dialogue mirrors the conceptual layering in my work: multiple temporalities, spatial shifts, and inner movements intersect across the surface. Each piece evolves organically, shaped by an internal logic that resists fixed interpretation.
Rather than depict the world, I create atmospheres—open spaces for reflection, memory, and encounter. My work seeks to suspend the viewer in a moment of becoming, evoking both the tension and the beauty of transformation. It is a visual language beyond words, a metaphysical cartography of change.
Rooted in a deep curiosity about the continuous flow of life, my art challenges static perception and celebrates the unseen dynamics that shape our reality.
