What do you aim to say by the themes in your work?
I don't rely on themes while I'm creating. However, I do tend to notice them once I'm finished with a piece. From colors to patterns to subjects, my goal is to make black people visible.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I'm inspired by the people I meet every day. I make sure to constantly look at art (social media, galleries, museums) for motivation to keep going. As far as my work, I think my inspiration comes from an individuals personality. I'm into colors and fashion so I try to incorporate that while also depicting an individuals mannerisms.
How would you describe your creative process?
I try to give myself grace when creating because I tend to work pretty fast. I now understand that a piece can take time so you have to be patient. I rarely sketch before a painting or drawing so usually my initial thoughts may not make it to the finish line. However, the pictures always end up being what I envisioned.
What is integral to your work as an artist?
The integral part of my work is black portraiture. No matter the particular subject--a black person will be visible.
Do you have any experiences that have impacted your art?
Yes. Most are personal experiences. I have a close relationship with most of the subjects I use within my work.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Keep going. Practice. Don't give up on your dreams. You'll get to where you need to be in your own timing. Stay in your lane. Let it all work out!
