Portraits have fascinated me from the beginning because the human face, more than any other part of the body, brings inner worlds to the surface but is simultaneously capable of hiding them - it can act as an open display or as a mask. Some of the portraits I paint are actual personae; others are solely the attempt to personify an ephemeral state of mind. It is all about layers and facets, turning them inside out, capturing emotions and expressions - the ones that show and the ones that are merely felt.
